Sunterra RE Opens 34 MW Battery Energy Storage Facility at Karlovo Photovoltaic Plant

Projects

Sunterra RE put the finishing touches on Phase One of its BESS investment with the opening of an electricity storage facility at the Karlovo Photovoltaic Plant. The system has an installed capacity of 34 MW and a usable capacity of 68 MWh.
The project includes 17 lithium-iron-phosphate batteries with an optimized charging and discharging cycle, ensuring maximum efficiency in different operating modes. Despite its more compact size, the system at Karlovo Photovoltaic Plant plays an important role in the company's overall BESS strategy.
The storage system allows for optimal use of the solar energy produced through modern inverters, transformer stations, and an intelligent control system.
"The completion of the BESS system at Karlovo Photovoltaic Plant marks the successful completion of the first phase of our ambitious program," said CEO of the company. "We have already started the second phase of the project and plan to commission an additional 1 GWh of batteries in the first half of 2026."
The project marks an important step in Bulgaria's energy modernization and confirms Sunterra RE's role as a reliable partner in the national energy strategy and the transition to sustainable energy.
