Sunterra RE Completes 1.3 GWh Battery Storage Programme

About the industry

Sunterra RE has completed the second phase of its large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) programme, bringing the total storage capacity at its Galabovo, Karlovo and Kaloyanovo photovoltaic parks to 1.3 GWh, with a total installed capacity of 397 MW.

The milestone was officially marked during Sunterra RE’s “Leadership in Renewable Energy & Storage” event, held at Hilton Sofia and attended by representatives of national and local authorities, financial institutions and partner organisations. The completion of this phase represents a significant step in the expansion of Sunterra RE’s activities beyond renewable energy generation, with an increasing focus on energy storage and energy asset management. The new systems enable solar energy to be stored and made available when the grid needs it most, rather than only at the time of generation.

“Renewable energy has transformed the way we generate electricity. The next step was to make that energy available precisely when the grid needs it. With 1.3 GWh of storage capacity, we are already delivering on this objective - and this is only the beginning,” said Boyan Karshakov, CEO of Sunterra RE.

The next stage in Sunterra RE’s development will focus on hybrid energy complexes that integrate multiple renewable energy sources with battery storage at the same site, supporting more predictable and flexible energy delivery.
