BESS Karlovo is part of Sunterra RE’s long-term strategy to develop a modern and sustainable energy infrastructure in Bulgaria. Located in the Karlovo Municipality and connected to the Karlovo Solar Power Plant, the project represents a key milestone in the company’s BESS development program. The system is designed to optimize and complement the operation of existing photovoltaic capacities, enhancing grid flexibility and improving energy management efficiency. The project has been implemented in two phases.
Phase 1 provides installed capacity of 34 MW and 68 MWh of usable energy storage.
Phase 2 expands the facility with an additional 63 MW and 252 MWh of storage capacity, significantly increasing the overall scale and impact of the battery park in the region.
The technological solution includes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, ensuring safety, reliability, and high efficiency across different operating modes. The system also comprises inverters, transformer stations, cabling infrastructure, and an intelligent energy management system that enables real-time optimization of power flows. BESS Karlovo plays a crucial role in enhancing the stability and flexibility of the electricity grid. By storing energy during low-demand periods and releasing it during peak hours, the system contributes to the optimization of energy costs and the predictability of electricity prices.
The installation of the system was completed in less than one year, including the delivery, assembly, and integration of all key components. The project demonstrates a successful combination of innovative technology, engineering expertise, and a sustainable approach to environmental responsibility.
